Winter has finally left us and in its place things are blooming all over. The downside to that blooming? Allergies. Everything was fine until one day I woke up and felt like my head was stuffed airtight. Allergy season has begun and being pregnant adds an extra level to your discomfort. While taking certain over-the-counter medications is approved by doctors I wanted to try and find another solution that didn’t involve taking medication unless I had to.
The Neti Pot
I admit, I was pretty leery of the neti pot when I first started using it. The idea of intentionally putting water in my nose seemed odd, but it does help with stuffiness and allergies. You can buy a neti pot at any drugstore and it’s easy to use. Most come with a saline solution already and you just need sterile lukewarm water. You create a seal with the spout on one side of your nose and let the water run through your sinuses and exit the other nostril. It helps flush out all the dust and other irritants that you breathe in that settle in your sinus cavity, it’s also great at flushing out any bacteria that may collect that could lead to an infection. My head felt lighter and less stuffy after using this a few times.
Allergy Remedy Drink
I saw this on Yahoo and decided to try it out. You take hot water and a tablespoon each of apple cider vinegar, lemon juice and honey. If you have local raw honey, it’s better but any honey helps. My allergies gave me a horrible sore throat so the honey soothed that nicely. The heat from the drink helps loosen up the stuffiness in my nose and it wasn’t an immediate cure but I did feel less congested when I woke up the next morning.
Now if these options don’t help you and you want to take the medication route, please call your doctor for recommendations on pregnancy safe medications. Don’t suffer if you don’t have to.
